The Assignment:

Every Friday, in addition to any other assigned work, you are to bring in a science-related article and a summary of that article in your own words. The article may be no more than 6 months old.

The article may come from a newspaper, magazine, the internet, or any reputable source. If you get an article from the internet, please stick with reputable sites such as those run by professional organizations and companies.

You will turn in:

1) A 2 to 3 paragraph summary, in your own words, of the important points made in the article. The summary should include the usual heading at the top right: your name, the date, the period, and the assignment title: "Science Article."

Here is an example of an Article Summary.

2) A copy of the article, or at least the first page if it is a long article. Somewhere on the first page, you must have:

a) the title of the article

b) the author

c) the source (name of journal or URL of website)

d) the date it was written or published

The article should be attached behind the summary

Look in the local newspapers or magazines that your family subscribes to. Please ASK your parents/guardians if you may cut out the article before doing so. You may copy articles from magazines in the library but NEVER cut anything out from library resources.

Here’s a list of websites that have science news for kids. This is by no means a complete list. If you have a specific science interest, there is probably a news site somewhere in cyberspace just for you.
